Located in the heart of the City of Sandy Springs, North Springs Charter High School was known as the "School on the Hill" when it opened its doors in 1963. A comprehensive high school accredited by the Georgia Department of Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, North Springs has been committed to excellence and preparing leaders for the future since its founding. Today many of our students have parents who graduated from North Springs.
In its nearly 50 years, North Springs has redefined itself several times to meet the changing needs of its dynamic and diverse student body which mirrors the growth and changes within Sandy Springs itself- which today - is home to many corporate headquarters and well educated residents who want the best education possible for their children.
In 1990, the Math/Science Magnet Program was created to provide students with leading-edge philosophies and techniques in the areas of mathematics, science, and technology. In 1996, the Visual and Performing Arts Magnet program was added to include dance, drama, choral music, instrumental music, visual arts, and technical theater; film and graphic arts have since been added. These additions make North Springs home to the only dual arts & sciences magnet program in the state of Georgia and one of four magnet programs offered by the Fulton County School System.
In 2006, after a year- long period of self study, the faculty and parent community voted to submit a charter petition to the county and state. Upon approval, North Springs in 2007, became the first public charter high school in Fulton County and the recipient of a one time $400,000 implementation grant. The Charter’s goal and focus is to prepare students for the 21st century with an emphasis on problem and project-based learning and real world hands-on instruction. In 2008, the Governance Board voted to change the school's name from North Springs Charter School of Arts and Science which it acquired in 2007, to simply North Springs Charter High School. The change acknowledges North Springs as first and foremost a comprehensive high school with an exciting and challenging array of courses and opportunities for all students across the curriculum. Now, in 2011, the original charter is up for renewal and the Governance Board will be submitting a revised charter petition for approval; to be implemented over five years beginning in 2012. The revised charter builds on the strengths of the original with changes designed to allow North Springs to continue to offer the best possible and most relevant education for all Spartans or as our mission states:
“To provide equity, excellence and excitement in education for ALL students.”
